Official Expedition Narrative & Archival Record

In February 2021, stranded in El Chaltén during the global pandemic, Belgian big-wall master Sean Villanueva O'Driscoll conceived one of the boldest solo journeys in mountaineering history: 'The Moonwalk Traverse'. Setting off alone on February 5, Villanueva traversed the entire skyline of the Fitz Roy range in reverse of the 2014 Caldwell-Honnold route, climbing from south to north. Over six continuous days, he scaled Aguja de l'S, Saint-Exupéry, Rafael Juárez, Poincenot, Kakito, Cerro Fitz Roy (3,405m), Val Biois, Mermoz, and Guillaumet. Climbing with a damaged sixty-meter rope, minimal gear, and a tin whistle to keep his spirits high during freezing open bivouacs, Villanueva climbed and rappelled more than five thousand vertical meters of granite and rime ice. Enduring sub-zero bivy nights shivering inside a light bivy sack and navigating wind-scoured technical pitches up to 5.11 and A1, Villanueva completed the complete traverse on February 10, 2021. The solo traverse was hailed worldwide as one of the greatest alpine undertakings of all time, earning him the prestigious 2021 Piolet d'Or.

Sean Villanueva O'Driscoll was born on February 7, 1981, in Belgium to an Irish mother and Spanish father. Discovering climbing in a Brussels gym at age thirteen, Villanueva rapidly fell in love with outdoor rock and the raw adventure of traditional big walls. Alongside regular climbing partner Nicolas Favresse, Villanueva became part of a world-famous cadre of Belgian climbers known for taking an acoustic approach to extreme mountaineering, carrying flutes, accordions, and guitars onto thousand-meter granite precipices around the globe. Villanueva made groundbreaking first free ascents on remote, sea-swept big walls in Greenland, Patagonia, and Baffin Island. In 2010, sailing aboard a fiberglass sailboat with Nicolas and Olivier Favresse and Ben Ditto, he established nine new big-wall routes on the sea cliffs of Greenland, earning the prestigious 2011 Piolet d'Or. In 2014, he completed major free variations in the Fitz Roy and Torres del Paine massifs, mastering vertical cracks up to 5.13. In February 2021, stuck in Patagonia due to global pandemic travel restrictions, Villanueva embarked on one of the greatest solitary climbs in mountaineering history: 'The Moonwalk Traverse'. Traversing the complete Fitz Roy skyline from south to north—reversing the direction climbed by Tommy Caldwell and Alex Honnold in 2014—Villanueva traversed Aguja de l'S, Saint-Exupéry, Rafael Juárez, Poincenot, Kakito, Fitz Roy, Val Biois, Mermoz, and Guillaumet completely alone. Carrying a single small backpack, an Irish tin whistle, and minimal aid gear, he spent six days navigating over five thousand meters of vertical granite. The feat earned him his second Piolet d'Or in 2021 and universal acclaim as one of the purest climbing masters of his generation.
