A Meeting of High-Altitude Masters
In the summer of 1982, Reinhold Messner arrived in Pakistan with an ambitious vision: to link up two 8,000-meter peaks—Gasherbrum II (8,035m) and Broad Peak (8,051m)—in rapid succession, climbing in pure alpine style with no fixed ropes, no high camps, and no supplemental oxygen. To partner with him, Messner invited Nazir Sabir, Pakistan’s most accomplished high-altitude mountaineer who had just made history on K2’s West Ridge the previous year.
Along with Sher Khan, the trio formed a formidable, highly mobile alpine unit.
Summiting Gasherbrum II
On July 24, 1982, carrying light bivi gear and freeze-dried food, Messner, Sabir, and Khan moved smoothly up the Southwest Ridge of Gasherbrum II. Overcoming loose rock ribs and deep snowdrifts in a single continuous push, they reached the summit of Gasherbrum II on July 24.
Descending back to Base Camp, they rested for only two days, refueled, and crossed the glacial moraine toward the foot of Broad Peak.
Capping the Double on Broad Peak
On August 2, 1982, the team began climbing Broad Peak’s standard West Ridge. Moving through intense heat on the lower snow slopes and extreme cold on the upper ridge, Sabir and Messner reached the main summit of Broad Peak on August 6, 1982.
In an era when standard Himalayan expeditions took months of siege tactics and miles of fixed line to climb a single peak, Messner and Sabir had summited two 8,000-meter giants in less than two weeks. The feat proved the supremacy of lightweight alpine tactics in the Karakoram and cemented a lifelong brotherhood between the two legendary alpinists.
