Topographic Architecture of Gerlachovský Štít
Gerlachovský Štít (2,654 m / 8,707 ft) is the highest peak in the High Tatras, in Slovakia, and across the entire 1,500-kilometre Carpathian mountain system. A fortress of dark granodiorite sculpted by Pleistocene glaciers, its dramatic couloirs and severe northern walls served as the foundational alpine training ground for Central Europe's mountaineers. Polish climbing legend Wiesław Stanisławski pioneered groundbreaking routes on its precipices in the 1930s.
